Josh Rosebrook Deep Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner

These samples of Josh Rosebrook Deep Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner came as part of the Autumn/Winter box by A Beautiful World. For today's post I thought I would share my thoughts on them.

Josh Rosebrook products skin and hair care products are some of the newer additions to the ABW website. Josh Rosebrook products contain carefully chosen organic and wild crafted plants, herbs and oils to cleanse, hydrate and condition hair. All products are carefully made in small batches.

I have to say that moving over to a greener shampoo and conditioner hasn't been an easy process for me. I have long fine hair, that is oily at the roots, but dry and damaged at the ends. My hair needs washing daily, otherwise it looks greasy. I find a lot of products either doesn't tackle the oil, weighs down my hair too much, or makes my ends completely frazzled. Quite often I need to use a different type of shampoo to my conditioner, so I was unsure whether both would be right for me.

So lets begin with the shampoo. Shampoo Ingredients (taken from the website): CERTIFIED ORGANIC ALOE VERA JUICE; DISTILLED WATER, ORGANIC AFRICAN BLACK SOAP, SAPONIFIED ORGANIC COCONUT OIL; ORGANIC OILS: CAMELINA SEED, HEMP SEED, JOJOBA, COCONUT, GRAPE SEED, EVENING PRIMROSE & ALMOND; ORGANIC HERBS OF: CALENDULA, NETTLES, CATNIP, ALFALFA, ROSE HIPS, FLAXSEED, DANDELION, ROSEMARY, LINDEN, BURDOCK, HORSETAILSAGE, CHAMOMILE, GINSENG, THYME, OREGANO, LAVENDERPEPPERMINT, GOLDENSEAL, CINNAMON AND CAYENNE; ORGANIC XANTHAN GUM & POTASSIUM SORBATE; ORGANIC ESSENTIAL OILS OF: LAVENDER, ORANGE AND PROPRIETARY BLEND OF OTHER ESSENTIAL OILS.

I think this is quite an interesting blend of ingredients. I can honestly say that I have never used anything with Catnip in it. For those who have allergies, not knowing the exact blend of essential oils may pose problems. This is a beautifully fragranced product. It is sweet and citrusy and reminds me of Weleda's SeaBuckthorn range.

The Deep Nourishing Shampoo foams lightly on application and felt easy to wash out. Some green shampoos I have tried have felt as though they haven't been washed out at all. The first time I used it was before going out for the evening and it left my hair lovely and soft and shiny. At first impressions I was very pleased with the results. However, the next morning my hair was starting to look greasy. I tried a couple more times, I tried washing it twice with the shampoo and same again. I will finish the shampoo by using it for an evening out, but this isn't the right product for me on a day to day basis. If however your hair is thicker and roots are drier than me, I would imagine this would be a very good product to try.

Onto the conditioner; Ingredients(taken from the website): CERTIFIED ORGANIC ALOE VERA JUICE; DISTILLED WATER; ORGANIC SHEA BUTTER, ORGANIC OILS: CAMELINA SEED, COCONUT, MEADOWFOAM, OLIVE AND HEMP; ORGANIC HERBS OF: CALENDULA, NETTLES, CAT NIP, ALFALFA, ROSE HIPS, FLAXSEED, DANDELION,  ROSEMARY, LINDEN, HORSETAIL, BURDOCK, PEPPERMINTSAGE, CHAMOMILE, GINSENG, OREGANO, THYME, LAVENDER, GOLDENSEAL,CINNAMON AND CAYENNE; ORGANIC PALM KERNAL; GUAR GUM; ORGANIC XANTHAN GUM & POTASSIUM SORBATE; ORGANIC VINEGAR; ORGANIC ESSENTIAL OILS OF: LAVENDER, ORANGE AND PROPRIETARY BLEND OF OTHER ESSENTIAL OILS.

As you can see the ingredients lists are fairly similar, so the same comments for allergy sufferers applies. The conditioner shares the same gorgeous fragrance and I am pleased to say that I had much more joy with it. I would leave the conditioner as long as time allows before washing out. On my greasy mop conditioner is only ever applied to the pony tail section. I found that it didn't weigh my hair down, made it much more manageable in terms of tangles, and made it look glossy and healthy.

This 60ml bottle lasted me just over 3 weeks of daily washing, which considering the length of my hair is pretty good. 3 weeks isn't long enough to test it's effectiveness against split ends, but they definitely weren't as noticeable. I have another 60ml sample to use, and think I would probably buy another of this size, rather than a full size (£28). The prices of the shampoo and conditioner reflect the quality of the ingredients, and I think for me this is more than I want to spend on an everyday conditioner. This is something I would keep as a treat.

  1. Nice to read your post! Shampoos are also a bit struggle for me too! x

  2. I have the same type of hair you do and I have to wash every day, too. I only use conditioner to wash my hair and scalp though. It was a lot of trial and error to find a good conditioner that didn't make me look like a greaseball!

  3. Ah I wouldn't be able to use this because of the potassium sorbate, but I've seen so much of JR on twitter that I feel like I need to have a proper look at the products. :) I'm currently using the Essential Care Herb shampoo, but it's not quite right for me - still on the hunt! x

  5. I still haven't used up my sample of the shampoo I got but it seems quite hydrating and I don't know if it might be too much for my oily roots too! Love his Hydrating Accelerator though!

  6. I love this shampoo and I agree that if I use too much my hair feels greasy more quickly than usual. The conditioner is a winner for me - many other brands just weigh my hair down or don't help with dryness/static.

  7. Crossing over to nontoxic shampoos has been the hardest for me too! I just started using JR skincare and I'm really impressed. The Day Cream with SPF 30 is my favorite so far- highly recommend!
